Reverend Joseph L. Jones
Reverend Joseph L. Jones, Sr. is a native of Valdosta, Georgia. He is the son of Garfield and Katie Bell Jones. He received his early education in Valdosta, Georgia, graduating from Pinevale High School in 1964. Reverend Jones is a graduate of Jersey City State College (NJCU) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. He completed additional courses in Management and Marketing at St. John's University, Queens, NY. He is currently a Master of Divinity degree candidate at New York Theological Seminary.
On September 29, 1964, Joseph Jones married Annie Rea Chandler and moved to Jacksonville, FL. They attended Day Springs Baptist Church in Jacksonville. Since 1965, Reverend Jones has been a very active member of Monumental Baptist Church in Jersey City, NJ. He engaged in dedicated service, participating in Sunday School, the Male Chorus, the Senior Choir and the MYCO Club. He also served as Deacon, Benevolent Treasurer, and Chairman of the Deacon Board.
Reverend Jones answered the call to the ministry in 1992 and was licensed to preach. He has ministered as Director of Visitation, Pastoral Care Giver and Assistant to the Pastor. In April 1994, he was ordained by the North Jersey Council. In December 1995, when Monumental was without a pastor, he served as Acting Pastor and in 1996 as Interim Pastor. In April 1997, Reverend Jones was called to serve as Pastor Elect and shortly thereafter as Pastor of Monumental Baptist Church.
Reverend Jones committed himself to continuing the Christian Missions Outreach-local and abroad-and Christian Education Ministries of the church as well as the local charitable outreach ministries-adding the 100 Black Men Health Fair Ministry.
Reverend Jones is also committed to having the church family grow in their knowledge of God's Word where Sunday School, Prayer Service and Bible Study have grown under his pastorate. Among other initiatives, special ministries include New Members Class; Mountain Movers (a prayer band); Pastor's Guild Ministry; Women's Retreat, Men and Women's Outreach Ministries; Angels of Praise Ministry (youth liturgical dancers); enrolled youth in annual Youth Bible Bowl of both the Missionary Baptist Association and the General Baptist Convention; involved the youth in Domestic Missions (they raised and awarded $3,000.00 and personally participated in national humanitarian services with the Katrina Project in New Orleans).
Pastor Jones is a strong advocate of promoting the educational pursuits of the congregation; in particular, the careers and educational opportunities of the youth of Monumental and the church community-at-large.
In 1999, he was awarded the status of “Eagle”-a special role model for the students at the Reverend Dr. Ercel F. Webb Public School #22 in Jersey City. Also, he served on the Mayor's Religious Advisory Council and the first black Police Chaplain in Jersey City.
Pastor Jones's vision for the direction of Monumental Baptist Church is rooted in the spirituality of Godly love and community enlightenment for its members. He has carried the Gospel to several states in the U.S.A. and to foreign countries of Aruba, Guyana, Jamaica, and in West Africa-Ghana, Togo, and Benin.
Reverend Jones has served as First Vice President of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of Jersey City and Vicinity. He now serves as Treasurer of the North Jersey District Missionary Baptist Association and President of The Baptist Ministers Conference of Hudson County.
